Driving Hong Kong forward: continued investment in infrastructure
A gist of the blog:
I visited the construction site of the Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok Link (TM-CLKL) a short while ago. The tunnel being built as a part of the TM-CLKL will be the longest sub-sea tunnel in Hong Kong. The TM-CLKL will shorten the journey time between Tuen Mun South and Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) to about 10 minutes and it will be much more convenient for residents of Northwest New Territories to travel to the Lantau Island for work in future. The residents can also benefit from the new job opportunities arising from many new projects to take place on the Lantau Island, such as the new third runway project of the HKIA.
The Government has been investing in infrastructure, with a view to making Hong Kong a more liveable, convenient, efficient and competitive city. At the same time, these infrastructure projects will help create more jobs and promote our economic growth.
Reclamation has long been an important option for us in increasing land supply. We have more than 100 years of history of reclamation in Hong Kong and there are a dozen of successful examples in Shatin, Ma On Shan, Tai Po, Tung Chung and Tseung Kwan O, where the new land has provided homes for hundreds of thousands of families, while improving their crowded living environment. These new lands also provided space to meet the increasing demand from the growing population and economy.
I hope the funding applications for Tung Chung New Town Extension - Reclamation and Advance Works and other public works projects will be approved by the Legislative Council soon, so that all of us in Hong Kong can enjoy the benefits brought along by these new infrastructure projects.
