Supporting the underprivileged community
A gist of the blog:
I paid a visit to Kwun Tong District last Wednesday and met with the elderly as well as children and young people. I am glad to see that the elderly centre and youth centre I visited on that day have established a caring network for the senior citizens and families in the community.
In the past few years, the Government has been increasing recurrent expenditure on education, social welfare and healthcare services to improve people’s livelihood. In 2017-18, the recurrent expenditure on these three areas is estimated to reach $78.6 billion, $73.3 billion and $61.9 billion respectively. Notably, the recurrent expenditure on social welfare has increased by 71 per cent when compared to 2012-13. Going forward, the Government will continue to allocate resources to improve healthcare services for senior citizens and elderly care services, and to nurture the young generation and empower them to pursue their dreams and fulfil their aspirations.
Apart from promoting economic growth, I believe it is also important that we put forward initiatives in the Budget that can truly benefit the people in need, enhance upward social mobility and alleviate intergenerational poverty, thereby promoting a caring and inclusive society.
