China International Big Data Industry Expo

When I wrote this article, I was attending the 4th China International Big Data Industry Expo in Guiyang to understand the recent development of big data, artificial intelligence and smart city initiatives in the Mainland. Senior officials of Guizhou Province identified the potential of big data development and gained policy support from the country in the recent years. This makes Guizhou Province significantly change from a backward economy to a fast and determined development.

Recently, President Xi Jingping made an important instruction to support Hong Kong to become an international innovation and technology centre. This instruction affirms Hong Kong’s important role in contributing towards the country’s strategy on innovation development and allowing Hong Kong to participate direct into her research and development projects.

To Hong Kong, development of innovation and technology is not a question of do it or not, but with an urgency to proceed further. In order for our innovation and technology pathway to break a new ground, we need to set a clear goal, invest resources, pool and nurture our talent and resolve the problems that we are facing.
